We launched and tested the application in vibrant Bali. Bali (usually) attracts a lot of visitors, many eager to explore the island, and was, therefore, the perfect location to get started.
Taking the kids to Bali this next upcoming holiday? What a great idea! Bali is not just a paradise-like holiday destination with a rich exotic culture, gorgeous beaches and the friendliest people, it is also a heavenly playground for families with kids! Pack up and make sure to bring your slippers, sunblock, sun hats and summer clothes, you are in for a true island adventure with the family. You can go swimming in crystal clear waters, surf world class waves and explore coral gardens beneath the surface of the sea. There will be monkeys, elephants, dolphins, waterfalls and fabulous private pool villas - you are bound to have a wonderful time! One word of warning though, once you’ve made it to Bali with the family, you’ll be coming back again and again, year after year, there is just no stopping it!
What to do?
The list of family-friendly activities goes on and on. Here are some things you won’t want to miss out on:
- Bali Tree Top Adventure
Let the inner Tarzan out or feel like Mowgli in the jungle - You sure can at Bali Tree Top Adventure Park located in the heart of the island in Bedugul. Zipline from treetop to treetop to get a birds-eye view of the park. It has got different circuits for the youngest to the oldest family members. Great fun!
- Rafting on the Ayung River
Up for some river adventure? Go rafting! The Ayung River is located close to Ubud which can be convenient as there are so many other must-visits in and around this cultural town, but you can also go rafting in Karangasem on the Telaga Waja River. Both are perfectly family-friendly with some rapids but none too scary. It’s an exciting but also a beautiful river trek. On a hot sunny day, it is wonderful to be out on the river. You can even swim in these cool waters which is a very different experience from swimming in the sea or in a pool and it is amazing!
- Family surf lesson
If not on the river, make sure to be riding those waves of the ocean. How about a family surf lesson? The beaches in Seminyak and Canggu are perfect for it!
- Beach play time
Building sand castles, playing with mud, there is nothing more fun for kids to be doing. On holiday, everything should be about sun, sand and sea but in Bali, it gets even better; mom and dad can have tropical cocktails at beach bars or beach clubs while watching the kids run around and play on the beach from afar. Everyone loves a perfect beach day and on the island of Bali - you can be enjoying those days on end. Stick around for sunset to get stunned!
Underwater sea walk
Ever thought you’d be walking on the bottom of the ocean? Didn’t think so! However, in Bali, sea walking is something you can actually do. Great for kids who can not swim yet, you’ll all be wearing a special sea helmet (making you look like an astronaut) and with the helmet on, you can breathe normally. Off you go, exploring the underwater world together and feeding some of the fish. This certainly is a unique experience to remember forever!
Snorkelling and diving
For the best snorkelling and diving experiences, head towards the quieter areas on the island such as Amed (northeast Bali) and Pemuteran (northwest Bali). You will find beautiful coral gardens, shipwrecks and fish in all colours of the rainbow as well as other sea creatures. A wondrous world to fall in love with! In Amed, you can go snorkelling right off the beach and if you want to go diving, there are plenty of family diving packages around with great guides.
Dolphins, monkeys & elephants
Yes, there is also plenty of wildlife to spot on the island. In Ubud, you can stroll around the Sacred Monkey Forest or visit the Elephant Sanctuary combined with a trip to the POD Chocolate Factory and Farm. The monkeys can be quite cheeky so it is important to keep things like sunglasses and phones away from places where they can grab them and run away. No worries, there are guides around and they sell bananas if you want to feed them. The Elephant Sanctuary is a special place where you can feed and bathe elephants. Kids will be talking about this experience for years. In Lovina, up in the north of Bali, you can go on a sunrise boat trip to spot hundreds of dolphins. Sometimes there can be too many tourists in boats at the same time, which makes the experience less magical. The solution? Go a bit later around 7.30 am (instead of 6 am).
There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants designed for families travelling with kids and they have cool on-site playgrounds or swimming pools. Check out Pirate’s Bay in Nusa Dua, ABC Beach Club in Sanur and cafes like Milk & Madu, La Casita and Tamora Gallery in Canggu.
With kids, the easiest way to travel long distances is by renting a car with a driver. You can get it as cheap as USD $60 for a whole day including petrol. In places like Sanur, you can rent a bicycle and cycle along the coastline and if you are staying in the centre of Seminyak, Canggu or Ubud, you can also get around on foot or hop into a metered Blue Bird Taxi. Plenty of options!
